IRS Warns Taxpayers of New E-mail Scams PDF Print E-mail

Phishing, as we all know is a mass e-mail scam used to induce the email recipient into providing confidential information that can then be used to gain access to private information.

A new scam has started to proliferate throughout th e Internet, involving the IRS. The latest approach as posted on the IRS web site this past January 14th provides more detail. These e-mails often target small business owners, as they are the most common targets of IRS audits.

Updated Jan. 14, 2008 (visit the IRS website for specific instructions). - A new variation of the refund scheme may be directed toward organizations that distribute funds to other organizations or individuals. In an attempt to seem legitimate, the scam e-mail claims to be sent by, and contains the name and supposed signature of, the Director of the IRS Exempt Organizations area of the IRS. The e-mail asks recipients to click on a link to access a form for a tax refund. In reality, taxpayers claim their tax refunds through the filing of an annual tax return, not a separate application form.

The IRS does not send out unsolicited e-mails or ask for detailed personal and financial information. Additionally, the IRS never asks people for the PIN numbers, passwords or similar secret access information for their credit card, bank or other financial accounts.

Mark Hill: A little research
Glad I could help - as we approach tax season, and I will leave my political views behind, as a small business owner. You know the tax you to death candidates – ok I did not leave it alone…

I believe it is always better to research anything you receive through the email, especially if you are being asked to provide personal information.

Barkley: My Grams got one
thanks for reporting this - my grams got a message like this and was ready to respond when she told me about it over lunch.

the Message looked real, but I thought it strange that the IRS would send an email, instead of a letter.

After google'ing this and seeing your post I realized I was right.

I hope that these guys get thrown under the jail.
