The Lynx bus agency will become the first mass-transit agency in the nation to run a fleet using its own blended bio-diesel, an environmentally friendly alternative to regular fuel.
A $2.5 million state grant awarded February 26th will allow Lynx to convert all 290 buses and four support vehicles to a diesel made from petroleum and plant oils. It also will allow the agency to set up a blending station that will serve the diesel fleets of Orange County and the Orlando Utilities Commission as well.
The blending operation will allow Lynx and the other two agencies to use 1.2 million fewer gallons of diesel fuel a year.
Bio-diesel will allow the agency to meet Gov. Charlie Crist's call for 10 percent reduction of greenhouse gas by government entities by 2012.
Lynx focuses on Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties with some service to Osceola, Polk and Volusia counties.
The grant comes from the Florida Renewable Energy Grants Program and was awarded Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
The new blending station should be open in early 2009.

Sorry for the late response, but I am of the opinion, any effort where CO2 reductions is the rule for the day, is doing a great job.
Seattle may have a better story to tell, but as time goes by, alterante energy sources may help reduce total emissions.
I can not say that I buy in to the whole ozone issues, since we have seen a number of ozone related issues, and drastic changes in temps for at least as long as temps have been recorded - ~150 years, but I know that adding bad stuff to the air is not healthy, so the more we can do to reduce the bad stuff, the better off we will be in the long run.

THEY SHOULD HAVE FOLLOWED THE EXAMPLE OF SEATTLE,KING COUNTY, WASHINGTON. KING COUNTY IS REPLACING ALL OF THEIR BUS'S WITH 59 PASSENGER HYBRIDS. THEY PROJECT A COST SAVINGS OF $750,000 GALLONS OF FUEL AND $3.5 MILLION IN MAINTENANCE SAVINGS!
I DON'T KNOW THE PRICE TAG,BUT AT $3.5 MILLION IN SAVINGS IT WOULD PAY FOR ITSELF IN AT LEAST 2 YEARS OR LESS
